ANYWAYS...EVERYDAY MY BITTERNESS AND RESENTMENT DIES OVER NOBODY'S APPRECIATION OF A BYGONE ERA...WHAT IN MY OPINION IS THE APEX OF RAPPING...AND IN CERTAIN RESPECTS, HIPHOP PRODUCTION

ANYWAYS I GOT THE GRIN OF MY LIFE WHEN I CAUGHT THIS FACT MAGAZINE PIECE:

**It’s a horrible task. A lot of great artists express their greatness prolifically, but few in the history of popular music have been so consistently brilliant for so long. I always lose mp3s from my hard-drive in meltdowns and extravagant flame-thrower accidents, but even with my sadly incomplete collection I still have over two days (that’s forty eight hours, if any of you are sleeping at the back) worth of Wiley mp3s which I’ve somehow had to pick just ten tracks from. It hasn’t been easy.

It’s not unreasonable to compare Richard Cowie to Bob Dylan or Miles Davis. It’s not like he’s not churned out a lot of shoddy material, like other legends, but his ability to adapt and find new ways of nuancing his skills is astounding. Wiley’s compulsive about music, and compulsively restless in the way he makes it. His plans change like the weather, he’s constantly unavailable, constantly changing his various mobile numbers: famously he’s like the 38 bus, cos he never turns up. He’s had beefs, fall-outs, and hissyfits galore, been stabbed 14 times, retired at least twice, and never released an album without denouncing it at some point, often before it’s been released. But each time you think he’s too bitter or dejected or exhausted to keep on making music (or at least, to keep on making good music), he hibernates as a ‘studio rat’ and comes back with some fresh wonder. He can’t help himself.

The concept of ‘scenius’, that inspiration comes from a collective semi-conscious mentality, is pretty appealing with grime. The grime scene has always had a collectivist, self-supporting attitude, despite mini-beefs, which in any case are usually more lyrical than real. As well as feeding on the communal hive-mind, collaborating constantly, Wiley’s had strong crew affiliations, from his early Pay As U Go days to primacy in Roll Deep, to a more sibling-like relationship with Boy Better Know. On radio, in lyrics, raves and interviews he exults the scene as a whole, and exults grime (“If you hear the name ‘grime’, Nan - I am the meaning”). He seems to feel the Godfather role keenly and has always been determined to bring people through. “If you’ve heard of Rascal watch out for Stryder” he spat back in 2003 – it’s quite poignant that both of these two have now had number 1 singles, something he’s failed to achieve.

Yet despite sitting proudly at the head of the table at grime’s family get-togethers, Wiley is a classic auteur, a one-man torrent of creativity. It’s not even about the Eski branding (sonically, or in the label or club night): just that in a scene of roaming militia, he’s always managed to be a lone gunman. And these ten essential Wiley tunes reflect him in that role – with a heavy heart I haven’t had room for any Pay As U Go or Roll Deep tunes, which is pretty astonishing really given how much good stuff he’s put out in both his garage and grime crew roles.

I’m going to cheat and cut a corner here and throw in bonus links to Wiley on Freeze FM spitting over jungle in 1998, and one of my favourite freestyles, ‘I’m like a 38 Bus Cos I Never Turn Up’. I always say this to people, so it would be remiss for me not to say it here: the best album Wiley’s ever put out was not actually put out by him: it’s free to download, and it’s the Grimetapes compilation of radio clips, Wiley Volume 1. **

DJ What What hails from Bloemfontein, where, due to his status in the South African DJ scene, he gets accorded superstar status. He studied at the same school in Johannesburg as DJ Cleo, who would later become his mentor, completing a diploma in sound engineering.

Having aced the course, and with time to kill (musicians do not get 8 to 5 type of jobs), DJ What What started messing around with some beats in his home studio, putting into practice what he had learnt in school. It was during this creative process that DJ What What began drawing attention from more established DJs and producers countrywide.

In 2005, DJ What What received a call from his idol, DJ Cleo, who had already released a hit album entitled Eskhaleni and was working on his second project. As luck would have it, DJ What What was offered the privilege, and grabbed it with both hands, of working with DJ Cleo on what was certainly the biggest song of 2005, called ‘Goodbye’, which remains one of the most recognizable tunes in the South African dance scene today.

But when you want to achieve greater things in life, you need patience, and it was not until 2007 that the young lad form Bloemfontein would see the his hard work and two year long learning process, culminate into his debut album, ‘What If’, which was released in August. The album is progressive, yet easy on the ear, allowing the listener to mellow into it, sampling such songs as “I’m yours’, ‘Feel the DJ’, ‘Bloemfontein’ which he dedicates to his hometown and the massive dance floor filler, ‘Can we try’.

Judging by the ever-increasing number of bookings and accolades coming his way, DJ What What has certainly earned the respect of the industry, is garnering a lot of fans, and is headed to the top.

**The Evil Acid Baron Show released in 1988 was the first acid house video, created by Stakker, with music by Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, Tyree, Baby Ford, Royal House and S’Express. The first video that I saw was actually the more accomplished Eurotechno (video still above), which came out the following year. Eurotechno blew me away when I first saw it at a house night in Cornwall and I went to Woolworths to buy a copy on VHS, which thankfully I still have. The pulsing, ever-changing graphics go perfectly with the futuristic acid soundtrack and is just as fresh as it was then .

Stakker were video artists Mark McClean and Colin Scott. After using other people’s music for their first video, they decided they wanted their follow-up to feature music they had commissioned themselves so that the music could more closely match the visuals. **

**McClean and Scott used a Fairlight CVI graphics machine, which was the video “sister” to the Fairlight CMI digital sampling synthesizer made famous by the likes of Herbie Hancock and Art Of Noise.**

**Often called the "Human Boa Constrictor" and the "Gelatinous Dancer". Originated and made famous the dance called the "Snakehips" in the early 1920's. A dance that is a wriggling, hip type dance that is descriptive of its name.

Tucker came to New York in the mid 1920's via the May Kemp show from Baltimore. Snakehips got his first dance Show at Connie's Inn shortly after arriving into town and became a fixture for many years there. As time passed he would work for many
Night Clubs and theatres namely The Lafayette and Cotton Club.

His costume was designed to show off his movements; it consisted of a loose fitting silk shirt with puffy sleeves, form fitting black bell bottom pants with a sequined cumberbun with a sparkling buckle in the center from which hung a large tassle. Sometimes he would replace the cumberbun and tassle with a sash wrapped around his waist a few times, tied, and hung down at the side. His aura was coarse, deep suggestive and menacing all at the same time, like a cobra stalking its prey.**

With influences like ‘spear chucking, ass busting, fashion trashing, derier splitting, electric boogaloo breaking, African bass music’ added to some new age electro beats, as well as hot raps that put you a head bopping frenzy all mixed together and you’ll have yourself Sweat X. They live up to their name by pumping out beats that shake the dance floor and get you to breaking into a sweat.

They “mostly went with [the name] SWEAT.X because it seemed like a good idea at the time, it [also] kinda sounds like our music… you know messy dirty and over the top. Apart from that Sweat.X gets abbreviated to S.X … which is the name of another project of ours.

They [Spoekolokoko and Markus] have been friends since [they] were babies, and have had many bands together. Markus reveals “we kinda began to grow distant as we grew older, but then a friend of ours cast us as actors in a movie he was shooting in Namibia. Something quiet traumatic happened to Spoek and I in that desert, something that brought us back together and inspired us to start a new band. We got lost in the desert, for a day and a half! Honestly! Finally we found shelter with some Nama nomads who gave us shelter. And that’s how the band started….”

Their lyrical style, apart from its brilliance can be quite sexual but Markus sets the record straight and says “some of our tracks are dirty but we do sing about lots of other stuff too. And here’s the thing: Deep down Spoek and I are all about girlfriends and finding love and soft fabrics and reading Roald Dahl by a fire place. As far as our lyrics are concerned we kind of get manipulated by our dirty minded audiences to come up with slogans like “I’ve got pussy on my mind”. Watch at our next show it’s all those young girls in front and the cougars in the back who sing those lyrics louder than anyone. So to quote Biggi ” don’t hate the player, hate the game.”

When asked if Sweat X has a certain message lyrically he says “No message. I don’t fuck with messages. Everything I’ve ever done has been some form of escapism. From writing music in which people can disappear into, or to dance and forget or to making fantasy art with the Blackheart Gang. I feel that the purpose of art is to transpose the audience. It might have to do with my own life or perhaps the social political climate of this country…”

Markus grew up in Pretoria moved to Cape Town and has been ground breaking in several projects including The Real Estate Agents and The Black Heart Gang, and it’s been reported that the Real Estate set is all mixed live with no practice beforehand. He admits “its always been tough for me to say that “I’m like this” or “I’m like that”. Music and writing has always come very naturally to me. Both my mom and dad and grandparents are writers and that’s a major passion for me [which he plan’s to continue in but in area’s other than music, such as novels]. He then says “Simon and I have been good friends for almost ten years now, and we have a company together. We really know each other very well both personally and musically, so when we jam we have enough confidence and trust to sort of delve into a squelching bass driven form of free jazz, I guess.( I dont mean like jazz-jazz-wear-a-suit-play-sax-jazz, I mean improvisation) and in Sweat.X I get to explore a more aggressive side in myself, and because I’m the only producer I seem to be getting away with it…”

They toured Berlin last year for 6 months and say of all the publicity that they received from that audience is because “we’ve got the best agent in Berlin. We’re getting quiet established I guess. People know our lyrics in like places you’d never expect like…like Kiev in the Ukraine. (laughs) But I wanna go to other places now, like the East…like Japan….only a matter of time I hope.”

The new things that are on the horizon for Sweat.X is the release of a new album with Citinite in June called “I’m that Alley”, things with the Blackheart Gang is that they have just started a publishing house and The Real Estates are going to start jamming again in October after a much-deserved sabbatical. He says “I am [also] beginning to explore more subtle mediums. I want to design sociological events using Internet 2 as a medium. To explore the dividing line between the real and the virtual, to create a realm of intrigue and mystery. But that’s all I can say at this point….”

The music industry to him “is an outlet” If he can keep doing what he’s doing than he’ll be happy. They would have most liked to work with “Little Anthony and the Imperials” in terms of collaborations but “were born at the wrong time…” Markus’s favourite thing about performing is that “I can go to this place, where there is a raw connection between my medium and I. I can lose time in that place. It’s very fulfilling…”

Spoek takes the longest to get ready before a gig, and as for who talks the most rubbish is a “tough one and depends who we’re talking to….the Dutch seem to always get a earful from Spoek, where as I seem to have quiet alot to say to the Swedes…” As for the craziest/funniest things that has happened at a show Markus says “we played in Paris once, and lots of girls started dancing topless around us, and we’re like trying to kiss me and stuff, that was…kinda…awkward I guess but lots of fun. You know how American art students can get in Paris.

Discrimination against albinos is a serious problem throughout sub-Saharan Africa, but recently in Tanzania it has taken a wicked twist: At least 19 albinos, including children, have been killed and mutilated in the past year, victims of what Tanzanian officials say is a growing criminal trade in albino body parts.

Many people in Tanzania — and across Africa, for that matter — believe albinos have magical powers. They stand out, often the lone white face in a black crowd, a result of a genetic condition that impairs normal skin pigmentation and strikes about one in 3,000 people here. Tanzanian officials say witch doctors are now marketing albino skin, bones and hair as ingredients in potions that are promised to make people rich.

As the threats have increased, the Tanzanian government has mobilized to protect its albino population, an already beleaguered group whose members are often shunned as outcasts and die of skin cancer before they reach 30.

Police officers are drawing up lists of albinos in every corner of the country to better look after them. Officers are escorting albino children to school. Tanzania's president even sponsored an albino woman for a seat in Parliament to show that "we are with them in this."

Salvator Rweyemamu, a Tanzanian government spokesman, said the rash of killings was anathema to what Tanzania had been striving toward; after years of failed socialist economic policies, the country is finally getting development, investment and change.

"This is serious because it continues some of the perceptions of Africa we're trying to run away from," he said.

But the killings go on. They have even spread to neighboring Kenya, where an albino woman was hacked to death in late May, with her eyes, tongue and breasts gouged out. Advocates for albinos have also said that witch doctors are selling albino skin in Congo.

The young are often the targets.
